WWF Australia and BCG Digital Ventures collaboration have come up with a blockchain powered food tracking platform, OpenSC, as part of their effort for a legal and safe environment. While launching the new platform in Sydney today, the WWF-Australia Chief Executive Officer Dermot O’Gorman said the OpenSC will bring about a new level of transparency. “Through OpenSC, businesses and consumers will have a whole new level of transparency about whether the food we eat is contributing to environmental degradation or social injustice such as slavery,” he said.
According to the information on WWF-Australia’s official website, the new platform uses cutting edge technology to track individual products from origin to consumer. It will help businesses and consumers avoid illegal. Environmentally damaging products. This will also help establish transparency and accountability. “OpenSC enables businesses to track their products, be it a tissue paper or food, by adding a unique blockchain code at the product’s point of origin, such as the moment a fish is caught. By simply scanning the product QR code with their smartphone camera, OpenSC will show where the fish in front of them was caught, how it journeyed along the supply chain and most importantly, whether it comes from a certified sustainable fishery or was it caught inside an established marine protected area.”
Paul Hunyor, the BCG Digital Ventures Managing Director, said the technology can reliably point out the exact location of where the fish was caught. “We have designed this technology to be highly compatible both with existing supply chain operations and certification systems, but also to interface with other blockchain-enable providence solutions,” Hunyor said.
WWF-Australia said OpenSC is good for business as the technology is driven by the conviction of good for the planet and humanity. Blockchain is being steadily adopted by world organizations as it cannot be controlled by a single entity and information gets locked in, thus no individual or party can edit or alter it.
